“How much PTO do I have left?” “Where can I find my latest payslip?” “Am I eligible for this benefit?” These are simple employee questions, but resolving them can mean checking the HRIS, searching policies, retrieving live data, chasing approvals, and updating records. At scale, that administrative work adds up.

HR teams have no shortage of AI tools in 2026. The harder question is which ones can actually help employees get HR work done. Many platforms can summarize a policy, answer a benefits question, or generate an HR response. Fewer can understand an employee's request, retrieve the right information, connect to live HR systems, take an approved action, route an approval, and involve HR when human judgment is required. That distinction matters when evaluating the best AI agents for HR.

Employees rarely think about which HR system contains the answer to their question. They simply ask: “Why is my paycheck lower this month?” “How much PTO do I have?” “Where can I download my payslip?” “Can I take Friday off?” “What benefits am I enrolled in?” For an HR team using ADP, much of the information needed to answer those questions may already exist in payroll, time, benefits, or employee records.

The service desk is becoming a natural proving ground for AI agents. That makes sense. An employee wants Friday off. Another needs a payslip. A new hire is waiting for system access. Someone else has moved house and needs to update their details. None of them really wants to “use Workday.” They want the request resolved.

IT support has a familiar problem. An employee says, “I can’t access Salesforce,” but solving that request may involve much more than answering a question. Someone has to understand what access is needed, check whether the employee is eligible, collect missing information, trigger an approval, update an identity platform, record the request in the ITSM system, and tell the employee when it is complete. For years, service desk chatbots solved only the first part of that journey.

For IT and HR leaders, the real question is not whether ServiceNow can use AI.

Yet a large part of the working day can still disappear into answering PTO questions, checking payroll details, coordinating onboarding, finding policies, following up on approvals, and responding to the same employee requests again and again.

HR case management software helps HR teams capture, organize, assign, resolve, escalate, document, and analyze employee cases from the initial request through closure. A traditional HR case might follow a familiar path: Case received → Categorized → Assigned → Resolved → Closed That structure brings consistency and accountability to requests that might otherwise be spread across emails, chats, HR systems, and individual conversations.

A hiring manager sends HR a simple request: “Maya starts next Monday. Can you make sure everything is ready?” The request sounds straightforward. The work behind it is not. HR needs to confirm Maya’s employee record. IT may need to create accounts and arrange a laptop. Her manager needs to approve application access. Payroll needs the right information. Training must be assigned. Someone also needs to make sure every task is actually completed before Monday.
